  What is Compounding?

Compounding is the art of combining pure materials to make new medicines that fit each patient's unique health needs.  Compounding pharmacists and technicians make a variety of compounds including topical creams, ointments, lotions, oral suspensions, suppositories, capsules, injections, eye drops and nasal sprays.

Why should I have a prescription compounded?

Commercial medicines are made to provide health care to the majority of the population.  However, since they are made for the majority of the population, they do not take into consideration the unique health needs of some individual patients.  Compounding pharmacists enjoy problem solving and will work with you and your physician to create a preparation that is right for you.

What are some common reasons to have a prescription compounded?

Allergies to dyes or fillers that are present in commercial capsules.

Medicine is not available in the desired strength, such as pediatric doses.

Patient is nauseous or cannot swallow medications.

Medicine is metabolized by the GI system, such as testosterone in hormone replacement therapy.

The pet will not take medicine orally.

What information does Hieber's Pharmacy need prior to filling a prescription?

The same information that any other pharmacy would need: name, address, phone number, date of birth, any allergies you might have, and what other medicines you are taking.  In addition, you need a valid prescription signed by a licensed practitioner.

How can I have a prescription filled?

You can have your physician call a prescription into the pharmacy or have them fax it in.  You can also bring the prescription into the pharmacy in person.  Compounds take at least an hour to prepare so order the prescription before you need to administer it.

  Do you deliver prescriptions?

Yes, we deliver to the heart of Pittsburgh, the Hill, Oakland, and Squirrel Hill as well as other surrounding neighborhoods.  We also ship prescriptions via UPS for an additional charge.

Do you accept Worker's Comp Prescriptions?

Yes, we accept Worker's Comp.  To fill a worker's comp prescription we will need a valid prescription, your name, address, phone number, date of birth, and allergy information.  In addition, we will need your employer's name and address, your date of injury, and the area that was hurt in the accident.  If you already have a claim number, we will use that to fill your prescription.

  Do you accept health insurance?

The only health insurance we accept is PACE  for senior citizens.  We will provide patients with the forms they need in order to submit a claim for the compounded prescription to their insurance for reimbursement.  Since each insurance company has a different policy on compounds, we advise all patients to contact their benefits coordinator prior to filling the prescription.
